Storyboard Text

  • Today, we have two couples looking for help for which reproductive technologies suit them best.
  • As a result of infertility and cultural changes which have sculpted the traditional family structure, reproductive technologies have become more prominent.
  • Couple One
  • Because you are a same-sex couple, I think In Vitro Fertilization would be the best for you two.
  • How does IVF work?
  • Ovulation Induction A fertility specialist will monitor the ovaries, and fertility medicines will be used to stimulate the ovaries to produce one or more eggs. Egg retrieval Using a very thin needle, the oocyte (egg) is isolated and placed in a culture dish containing nutrient media and then transferred to the incubator. Fertilization A sperm sample is secured, from a donor, and the most active sperm is mixed with the egg. Then, the sperm and egg are placed in an incubator and monitored. Embryo transfer and Implantation The embryos are examined to select the healthiest ones for transfer. A speculum is placed into the vagina and the embryo(s) are transferred through the cervix into the uterine cavity to develop.
  • Couple One
  • That's amazing, I can't wait to get pregnant through IVF! Thank you!
  • We are having issues conceiving as a result of a low sperm count. What reproductive technology should we consider?
  • Couple Two
  • I would recommend  Intrauterine Insemination. Let me explain how it works.
  • Purification The male partner will give a sperm sample, which will be washed and prepared for the IUI procedure to create a high concentration of the healthiest, most mobile sperm to reach the egg. In addition, the woman’s ovulation cycle will be closely monitored and fertility drugs can be given. Insertion 1. The female will lie down on the exam table as one would normally do for a pelvic exam. 2. A doctor will insert a very small, thin and flexible catheter into the cervix.   3. The washed sperm sample will be injected right into the uterus.
