A boy named Daniel sails on a ship with fellow Holocaust Refugees to New York, but get turned away and land in Cuba. His family is Jewish and had to flee Nazi Germany, his parents couldn't afford anymore tickets, so he is traveling solo. He dreams about seeing them again.
Paloma- Her Father is a representative who decides which refugees are allowed in. "My Father's secrets torment me. Almost every evening I hear him whispering plans...I come from a family of secrets"
When Daniel is accepted on to Cuba, he meets a girl, Paloma, and a former refugee man who helps him around Cuba, named David.
Daniel stays in a refugee camp, "I never stop dreaming of my parents."
"I heard my Father say that all these refugees from faraway places are making him rich"
Carnival of Cuba
Just dance, everybody here does, no matter what religion.
They visit the annual carnival. David is trying to make Daniel feel welcome in Cuba, and forget his past.
"My parents would not approve of celebrating a catholic saint's birthday...I decide to dance"
Paloma hides this couple in her dovecote, she knows if her father or the Nazis find them, they would be separated. "Someone could find them and accuse me of treason."
"The train is filled with orphan boys heading to an orphanage on the Hershey ranch, where the American chocolate maker gives them a home and plenty of chocolate made with Cuban sugar."
They all took a train to the countryside, to hide the couple with Paloma's cousin.
