Unmasking the Symbols, By Shelby Grace
mask of the red death, Shelby Grace
This first symbol that I caught in the Mask of the Red Death was that of the actually house. How it was surrounded in gates of iron. How it was seemingly impenetrable. To me this really shows how they believe they are safe. To all the masqueraders this house is a symbol of protection.
The Second symbol I found was that Ebony Clock. It can be thought of as many different things; How many seem to actually watch their time tick away. Fear of what the following hour will bring. And most definitely The idea that each time it sounds you are simply that much closer to hearing it for the last time.
The "Masked Figure" Is a chacter that seems to embody the fear that lived in ever living being at the party. He was a Real life example of how death can be all around around you and you don't notice till it is staring you dead in the eyes, pun intended. But, just as many realized in this story, there is nothing you can do to stop it from reaching havoc on a daily basis.
Ah, the simple number seven. It's a reoccurring theme not only in this story but also in life. Have you ever heard of the seven deadly sins? I thought so. But In this case we're not talking about the bad things you do in life, but your life in and out of itself.
The rooms are arranged for east to west, as the sun rises and sets. It starts with the color Blue symbolizing birth, and ends with the color black a common color for death. coincident!? I think not.
And finally the lone dagger. This symbolizes how no matter how hard we try we will never escape death. Prince Prospero Did everything in his power to cheat death. Even in his last resort, To kill the masked figure, he was shown that nothing is as powerful as fate.
