Katerina Petrova a German immigrant came to America as a 17 year old orphan. She moved to Virginia in 1870.
Katerina left Germany because of the Franco-Prussian War. In moving to the US she got new opportunities for education and opportunities for work. She went to school for a few years before she got a job. She came to Alexandria through the Alexandria port from New England. Alexandria was a independent city.
Since Katerina was only 17 she had little options. Because of the war in Germany, she knew what it was like to be living somewhere right after a war.
Katerina was educated by her father before he died in Germany. He also taught her English for when she left to go to America. When she arrived to Alexandria she was accepted by many of the other women there because of her kind nature and her gorgeous looks. She was grateful to have made friends so quickly. She lived by a few of her friends from Germany in Alexandria. The houses looked different in some ways in Alexandria than in Germany.
Katerina was nervous about moving to America because of the people she would meet and how she would be treated. When she was treated well, she was hoping to meet someone, get married and have kids.
In May of 1880 Katerina met a British immigrant named Jacob who was 28 years old. They got married a year later and moved from Alexandria to the city of New York. They lived happily ever after with two kids.
