  • You're a fishmonger!
  • Within the castle, Claudius and Gertrude are talking to Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, two of Hamlet’s friends from Wittenberg. Increasingly concerned about Hamlet’s erratic behavior and his apparent inability to recover from his father’s death.
  • Polonius tries to have a conversation with Hamlet, who appears insane; he calls the old man a “fishmonger” and answers his questions irrationally.
  • Rosencrantz and Guildenstern come to talk to Hamlet. They talk about how Hamlet is unhappy with everything happening in Denmark. Hamlet asks why the two have come to see him and they say just to visit, but Hamlet knows the king and queen sent them.
