- Young Lizabeth and her brother joey went out into the neighborhood to have some fun and thought of an idea to ruin the beautiful marigolds in Miss Lottie's ugly garden. They planned on throwing stones at them to destroy the flowers, when Miss Lottie came out side and told them to stop.
- Later that night,Lizabeth woke up to her parents arguing about what they have and don't have. Lizabeth's father was crying and her mother was calm. She for some reason wanted to go back to Miss Lottie's. She had understood what she had done wrong that day.
- The next day she quickly woke up and ran to miss lottie's house. She sat down on her porch and started crying after she saw the ruined marigolds. When she looked up, miss lottie was standing there looking at her but this time her face looked innocent. Lizabeth understood that Miss Lottie was just trying to bring out the prettiness in the flowers in this dark time.
