  • We have finally reached S5! That was a pretty long trip.
  • Rose

  • Sure it was, but I am sure today's interview going is to be very productive.
  • Ms Amy
  • Hi! Welcome to S5! I will be in charge of your day here today!
  • Not a problem. In simple terms, Port Agency is the representative for the ship owners, and provide services to ship owners.
  • Some services are bunker call, manning ship owners' matter and cargo operation.
  • We are really glad to be here. Could you start off by sharing with us a short summary of Port Agency?
  • Introduction to Maritime Industry: Port Agency Sector
  • Wow, sounds really interesting.. Could you share with us what do you do in your work operations on a daily basis?
  • Like most, I start my work from 9am to 6pm. My daily work routine includes clearing the email box, submission of reports to the head office in HongKong via email, interviews for recruitment, attend department meeting and attend to phone calls.
  • Rose & Jack are students who has requested for an interview session with Ms Amy, an Port Agent in the S5 Company, to get a better idea of the job scopes of a Port Agent.
  • For HR, I think the most difficult part for me would be to terminate staffs due to inefficiency and redundancy. 
  • I see. How about some of the most difficult areas that your department has to solve or work on?
  • Port Agency deals more with owners and bunker. As it is compulsory for all vessels to have immigration clearance, it is the agent's job to apply for clearance. As for owners' matter, the agent's jobs are to extend expiring trading certificates, management crew change documentation and manning or purchasing of vessel.
  • For the operational side, it'd be meeting the customer's demands which are mostly the Captains.
  • As Ms Amy is head of HR Admin & Management department, her jobs are mainly to plan and execute monthly meeting and her own department meeting. She also allocates work, attend to more of administrative work and must also be prepared to attend to unforeseen problems.
  • Retrenchment has to be done when a company performance is deteriorating, or when there are too much staffs and too little work (redundancy), in order to improve the company by focusing on a lesser sectors.
  • As for operational side, HR department must be very tactful when having discussions with Captains. HR department also has to be fully in charge of crew change, which would be problematic at times as crew might have cases of getting drunk, shop theft etc.
