Victor receives a letter from his father that contains very bad news. One of Victors little brothers, William, has been murdered.
The Frankenstein family has a new servant her name is Justine, they love and treat her like family. Justine incidentally got locked out of Geneva for a night so she slept in a barn all alone.
Victor finds out that his monster has killed William but doesn't tell anyone for fear of looking crazy. He is selfish and thinks that hes's being tortured by his own guilt when the person with the real problem is Justine.
"During the whole of this wretched mockery of justice I suffered living torture." (Shelly 64)
Justine is being held responsible for killing young William Frankenstein. The evidence is she had a picture of Caroline Frankenstein in her pocket that was last in William's possession before he died. Also, she has no alibi because she slept in the barn.
Justine has stood by Elizabeth's side through many things including her own mothers death. She takes stand and speacks for her innocence but theres no saving her because everyone thinks shes guilty.
"I do not hesitate to say that, notwithstanding all the evidence produced against her, i belive and rely on her perfect innocence." (Shelly 67)
Justine confessed to the murder even though she didn't actually do it, she thought they would go easy if she "told the truth". Her punishment was death. however, she was okay with it because she knew she didn't do it
