  • TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD By: Harper Lee
  • "Safely on our porch, panting and out of breath we looked back. The old house was the same, droopy and sick, but as we started down the street we thought we saw an inside shutter move." (19)
  • SMACK!
  • "Miss Caroline picked up her ruler, gave me half a dozen quick little pats, then told me to stand in the corner. A storm of laughter broke loose when it finally occurred to the class that Miss Caroline had whipped me." (28)
  • "'First of all," he said, "if you can learn a simple trick, Scout you'll get along a lot better with all kinds of folks. You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view--until you climb into his skin and walk around in it.'"(39)

  • The first reason happened the day I rolled into the Radley front yard. Through all the head-shaking, quelling of nausea and Jem-yelling, I had heard another sound, so low I could not have heard it from the sidewalk. Someone inside the house was laughing. (54)
  • "'Do you think they're true, all those things they say about B-Mr. Arthur?' 'What things?' I told her. 'That is three-fourths colored folks and one-fourth Stephanie Crawford,' said Miss Maudie grimly." (60) "I remember Arthur Radley when he was a boy. He always spoke nicely to me, no matter what folks said he did. Spoke as nicely as he knew how.'" (61)
