  • Welcome to Halloween Hang Out! Where we have the trendiest costumes!
  • Hmmm...what do I want to be this year? Maybe a witch, or princess! Oh, I got it!
  • Perfect I love it! I am a Medieval Woman!
  • Actually, women in the Byzantine Empire were seen as weak and powerless.
  • Who are you? Oh, you're dressed as a knight! Do you work here?
  • Nope! I have come from the Middle Ages to teach you about Medieval Christian Europe! We don't have much time! You need to come with me NOW!
  • We're in the Byzantine Empire! We are standing in front of one of the many castles. Castles were built to protect monarchs that lived in these from attacks! Us knights were also in charge of protecting them.
  • Where are we?
  • Our economy was first based on feudalism. It included a network of mutual relationships between a ruler and the ruled. Under a feudal contract, a lord gave his vassal a fief, or estate of land. The fief was included with peasants and buildings. The lord also promised to protect the vassal, but in return the vassal provided loyalty, military service, money, and advice.
  • It then became based on manorial system. Manors were the lord's estates. The lords had power over the peasants who worked and lived on the estate. They provided land and protection while the peasants provided labor.
  • After Rome became the Byzantine, Constantine ruled as emperor. Justinian ruled as emperor and brought Byzantine to it's highest peak. He created Justinian's Code that included laws passed by assemblies, other emperors, and judges. These laws united the empire and Justinian ruled with absolute power.
