  • I'm Tallmadge and the U.S. government should have more power than the states because they know best.
  • Northern Free States Feelings about the 36°30′ line? 
  • I'm Douglas and the 36-30 line is great because we can recruit so many more states. 
  • Northern Free States: Who was involved?
  • We're Tallmadge and Douglas and we played important roles in the debate that resulted in the compromise. 
  • The Northerners felt that the Federal Government should have more power than the states.
  • Southern Free States:  Feelings about state additions?
  • Everyone deserves a fair chance!! Popular Sovereignty is the answer!
  • The Northern free states are supportive of the 36-30 line as, it gives them a chance to recruit more anti-slavery states. Because of the 36-30 line, Maine was added they were really happy about that.
  • Southern Free States: Feelings about the 36°30′ line? 
  • Congressman James Tallmadge and Steven Douglas were the leading congressman involved.

  • Southern States felt that only the states should choose if there are slaves or not by popular sovereignty.    
  • Southern States felt that the north was favored and that they didn’t get as much land, but they hoped that with the southern expansion they would gain land.
