  • Marie Sklodowska curie attained her diploma in physics and maths at the reputed Sorbonne university
  • Marie met the physicist Pierre curie in Paris who shared the same interests as Marie
  • they both tied up and went to Poland. in 1896,Henri becquerel discovered that uranium spontaneously emitted a mysterious x ray like radiation. Marie then found that thorium emitted similar radiations
  • Marie concluded that the radiations was coming from the atoms of these elements ,the radiation was proportional to the quantity rather than physical changes
  • The curies together arrived at the theory that uranium alone couldn't produce these radiations alone and there existed other similar elements
  • they worked out and studied a super-radioactive ore called pitchblende
  • 1902, the curies together along with the help of Henri becquerel extracted a small dividend of pure radium chloride salt from several tons of pitchblende
  • 1898, Marie and Pierre both discovered two new elements radium and polonium
