In the things they carried, Lieutenant Jimmy Cross describes his love to Martha even though she never gave an indication of loving him back. He also described all the things that the soldiers carried in their bags. All of them being different in proportions and material type. Later in the chapter Lavender was shot and died in action making Lieutenant Cross think about how he wasn’t focusing in the war but on Martha more.
O'Brien always wrote of what he remembered from the war even though his daughter would suggest him to write about something else. He felt as if it was like telling what he could never forget.
A couple of years after the war, O'Brien and Lieutenant Cross finally got to catch up. They spoke about the war and everyone who had perished but O'Brien wanted to know what ended up happening to Martha. Cross only said she had moved on but nothing more.
O'Brien, when first learned about the draft, he planned to escape to Canada. He left suddenly one day when he started to panic, and on his way he met Elroy Berdahl. They spent 2 weeks together and there O'Brien explained why he was leaving to Canada. after some time he asked what hed have to pay him since he took such great care of him but Elroy told him he didn't have to pay. O'Brien insisted yet when he was finally leaving he found $200 in an envelope that Elroy had left for him. When he was finally leaving to the Canadian border with Elroy, he broke down because of the decision he was about to make. Elroy said nor asked anything but knew he had too turn around.
