  • These taxes upset farmers, as they feared that their cotton exports would be hindered. 
  • 1832 - South Carolina passes the Nullification Act and threatens to secede from the US. Jackson responded with the Force Bill, which would allow him to use military enforcement techniques. In the end, a lower tax was issued and South Carolina backed down.
