  • Today I would like to tell you about how the geographic features of an area influence the people that first lived there.
  • The geographic features of an area influenced the Native American's shelter, diet, and clothing choices. 
  • The Great Plains Pawnee tribe lived in teepees of buffalo hide because of the abundance of buffalo in the area.
  • They also wore buffalo hide clothing. They hunted deer and elk for food.
  • The Pueblo tribes of the Southwest lived in clay homes because of the clay soil in the area. 
  • They also made pottery out of clay.
  • They grew crops such as maize, beans, squash, and corn because of the fertile soil.
  • The Onondaga tribe made longhouses from the branches of trees because they lived in the forest.
  • They also hunted whales which they used as a source of fat and to make clothing.
  • The Inuit tribe of Artic regions of Alaska and Canada lived in igloos made of packed snow.
