My Name's Sophia, I'm Leaving my family in Germany for the US, where the economic opportunities are increasing at a rapid rate.
Before boarding the ship to Ellis Island, I had to give up much of my personal information, and go through many medical exams to ensure that I am well enough to endure the 8 day trip over seas.
The trip to America was a tough one, many people got sick in the tight quarters in the steerage, we rode down here because we couldn't afford first class tickets. Often, people died from disease.
Upon my arrival at Ellis Island, I was greeted with more medical examiners trying to ensure I didn't get any diseases on the way here, and that I was well enough to contribute to society, and I had to give out more personal information so they knew who I am
Now that I have been granted Citizenship in America, everyone is treating me better than how I could be treated. I got a job in a factory, I work long hours, with a few tough conditions, but I'm making money.
In America, I now have religious freedom, and I can easily find a job. Life is a bit better now, even though I'm without my family.
