A few decades after, the Vikings control a large part of the middle of Britain. They spread their own language, Old Norse, so the Anglo-Saxons start borrowing new words from the Vikings and adding them to their own language
1066:The viking age is over, and Britain is invaded again by William the Conqueror from Normandy in France.
The Normans and William are descendants of Vikings who mixed with the local French population and were given the area of Normandy by the French king.
After a few hundred years, the Norman royal family and upper-class minority was swallowed up by the English majority and Britain was all English again, now with over 7000 new French-inspired words.
1400-1500: Scientists and inventors were making new discoveries in technology and medicine at a faster rate. All these inventions needed names in English.
The scientists worked on universities and schools, where greek and Latin were the respected languages of education. That is why they used Greek and Latin roots of words as inspiration for their new English words.
