  • I was starting to understand. He was a math teacher. I had to add my hope to somebody else's hope. I had to multiply hope by hope.
  • Where is hope? Who has hope?
  • And now, you have to take hope and go someplace where others have hope.
  • "Son, you're going to find more and more hope the farther and farther you walk from this sad, sad, reservation (43)"
  • "I used to think the world broken down by tribes,' I said. 'By black and white. By Indian and white. But I know that isn't true. The world is broken into two tribes: The people who are a****** and the people who are not." (176)
  • "...And I knew that Rowdy's father was probably going to beat the cra out of him for losing this game. I suddenly wanted to apologize to rowdy, to all of the other Spokane's. I was suddenly ashamed that I'd wanted so badly to take revenge on them.  I was suddenly ashamed. I was suddenly ashamed of my anger, my rage, and my pain." (196)
  • "All these white kids and teachers, who were so suspicious of me when I first arrived, had learned to care about me. Maybe some of them even loved me. And I'd been so suspicious of them, And now I care about a lot of them. And Loved of a few of them." (213)
  • "I realised that, sure, I was spokane Indian. I belonged to that tribe. But I also belonged to the tribe of American immigrants. And to the tribe of basketball players. And to the tribe of bookworms. And to the tribe of cartoonist. And to the tribe of chronic masturbators. And to the tribe of teenage boys. And to the tribe of small town kids...." (217)
  • "I would always love Rowdy. And I would always miss him, too.  Just as I would always love and miss my grandmother, my big sister, and Eugene. Just as I would always love and miss my reservation and my tribe. I hoped and praed that they would forgive me someday for leaving them. I hope and prayed that I would forgive myself for leaving them." (230)
