Chemistry Storyboard part 3

Storyboard Text

  • The number of protons determines what type of atom the atom is
  • We are Helium-4 because we have 2 protons and 2 neutrons
  • Elements have atoms with different amounts of neutrons, called isotopes. They are still the same type of atom because the number of protons is the same.
  • We are Helium-3
  • Hydrogen for example has three different isotopes, but the most common in Hydrogen-1. Its atomic mass is one because it has no neutrons.
  • The number of electrons does not affect what type of atom and atom is. They only affect charge, more on that later though.
  • The electrons of atoms are arranged in 'shells'. The outermost shell is called the valence shell.
  • Electrons in the valence shell are called valence electrons.
