"Mommy, where do criminals come from?", asked Hunter. "Well honey, there are many people who've tried to answer that and they have all come up with different answers", replied Hunter's mom.
"There was a man, Cesare Lombroso, who thought that criminals were born as criminals. He thought all criminals had large jaws, low foreheads, high cheekbones, flat nose, big ears, a hawk nose, big lips and, long arms", said Hunter's mom. "But my arms are long and I have big ears. Does that mean I'm a criminal?, asked Hunter. "No, because they soon found out that not all criminals looked like that", replied Hunter's mom.
"Then came Howard Becker. He said that when people in power put a label on someone, that's what everyone follows", said Hunter's mom. "We always call this boy in my class an idiot. Does that mean everyone in our grade is going to call him and treat him like an idiot?", asked Hunter. "According to Becker, yes", said Hunter's mom.
"Then what stops someone from being a criminal?", asked Hunter. "In the social control theory, there's 4 things that stops someone from being a criminal. When someone is very close to other people, follows rules, always plays and works with their friends and family and, have values, they won't become a criminal", said Hunter's mom.
"There's a group of big kids at my school and now Ela's big brother hangs out with them. He's really mean now, fights with everyone and, uses bad words. Why does he do that?, asked Hunter. "That's the social control theory. He's acting differently because he has learned to do that from his friends. If one of his friends does that and everyone cheers him on then he'll want to do that too", said Hunter's mom.
