A gun shot rang out. "He ran until he could not run anymore" pg.9
Hoping to find someone in his family, Salva keeps walking. "Salva!" he hears someone call. It's Uncle! "We are together now, so I will look after you!" pg.35
Together, they walked. In the horizon Salva and Uncle could see figures. They were rebel soldiers! They grabbed Uncle and shot him. Salva was devastated.
"Despite the numbness in his heart, Salva was amazed to find himself walking faster and more boldly than he had before."pg. 65
Salva had reached the Gilo River but rebel soldiers were attacking him. He didn't know how long he was in the water but "Salva would think of his family and his village, and he was somehow able to keep his wounded feet moving forward, one painful step at a time."pg.54
Thanks to Salva's mental strength he was able to reach a refugee camp in Kenya. Salva eventually moved to New York and started the Water for South Sudan to help raise money to build wells for the people in Sudan.
