  • My successors and I have established a common law. This is a legal system based on the custom and court rulings.
  • After the common law was established, a jury has developed. This jury was similar to what we have today. The jury decides whether a trial goes to jail or not.
  • I am William, William the Conqueror. I have defeated Harold in the Battle of Hastings to gain control of England.
  • Religious zeal
  • The Crusades lasted from 1096-1204 with Christians never achieving their goals. The first Crusades was the only war that came close to achieving Christian objectives.
  • Win wealth and land
  • Adventure!!!
  • Escape home troubles
  • As economic and political conditions improved in the High Middle Ages, education needed to expand. The Church wanted better-educated clergy. Sons of wealthy townspeople hope to qualify for high jobs in the Church or royal governments.
  • Our sons will be educated so they can have high quality jobs. They will help spread new learning.
  • Monarchs strengthened ties with the middle class. Townspeople supported royal rulers, who could impose the peace and unity that were needed for trade.
  • People believe that I (God), am giving people this disease as a punishment.
  • By 1348, the Black Death had reached beyond Italy to Spain and France. It then spread quickly throughout Europe. This was worse than any war in history.
  • My husband is part of the 1/3 of the population dying from this!!!
  • The Hundred Years' War was fought between Britain and France from 1337-1453. It was caused by an English King attempt to retain control over their Norman ancestors land in France. The effects of this war was new technologies, cannon and bow, and had important cannon soldiers and armored knights.
  • The French nearly lost the wars until the emergence of Joan of Arc. She was a 17 year old peasant women who convinced Charles VII to allow her to lead the French forces.
  • Feudal monarchs in Europe relied on vassals for military support.
  • Nobles and the Church had as much, or more power than the monarch. They both had their own courts collected their own taxes, and fielded their own armies. They jealously guarded their rights and privileges against any effort by rulers to increase royal authority.
