I want to go back to my childhood when I was innocent, but I've seen so many new things from these memories.
"There are so many good memories."
"I'm happy to give it to you."
"What memory is your favorite? You don't have to give it away yet."
Thank you Grandma and Grandpa!
"What did you perceive?"
Jonas doesn't want to continue his training after he saw the Giver's brutal memory of warfare. He wants to go back to his innocent childhood, but he knows it is his duty to receive these memories and protect the community from wisdom. The Giver treats Jonas to happy memories often to make up for the memory of warfare.
"Grandparents. It means parents-of-the-parents, long ago. "
"Warmth, happiness and family. It was a celebration of some sort. Who were the old people?"
Jonas has seen many happy and disturbing memories. He wants to know what the GIver's favorite memory is. The Giver happily shares it with him.
"I couldn't quite get the word for the whole feeling of it, the feeling that was so strong in the room."
Jonas enters the Giver's favorite memory and immediately feels joy. He sees a family give each other presents and unwrap them together with happiness and delight. The family spends time together celebrating.
"What do you mean?"
"I was thinking that it was kind of nice, then. The family in the memory seemed a little complete. I wish we still had the feeling of love."
"Well...they had fire right there in that room. There was a fire burning in the fireplace. I can certainly see why those things were outlawed."
"Of course, I do understand that it wouldn't work very well. And that it's much better to be organized the way we are. I can see that it was a dangerous way to live."
Jonas tells the Giver that he felt many joyful emotions. He asks the Giver who the elderly people in the memory were and the Giver explains what grandparents are.
Jonas isn't sure what the strong feeling that he experienced in the memory was. He asks the Giver about it and the Giver explains love to him.
Jonas tells the Giver that he liked the feeling of love and he wants to still have love in the families. He quickly says that he sees why it isn't ideal for the community to have it, but he has trouble explaining why.
