"Father means that you used a very generalized word, so meaningless that it's become almost obsolete... Do you understand why it's inappropriate to use a word like 'love'?"
"Yes, thank you, I do."
"Father? Mother? Do you love me?"
"Jonas. You, of all people. Precision of language, please!"
"Things could change, Gabe. I don't know how, but there must be some way for things to be different. There could be colors. And grandparents. And everybody would have the memories... There could be love."
Jonas asks his parents if they love him and they scold him slightly, explaining that it is a meaningless, rarely used word. Jonas lies to his parents for the first time when he says that he understands what they mean. Jonas forgets that his parents are incapable of feeling love and that is why he doesn't get the answers that he expected.
Jonas talks to Gabe in private because he knows about the memories. He wishes that there was some way to change the community and make it like Elsewhere, with all the happy experiences he sees in the memories.
Jonas throws out his Stirrings pills because he wants to feel the emotions that he feels in the memories even when he isn't training.
