Storyboard Text

  • We should wear black armbands to school to show our support of a truce in the Vietnam War.
  • I agree. It isn't right and young men from our own town are dying because of this war!
  • Stop! The new school rule states that you cannot wear armbands against the Vietnam War! You are suspended!
  • This is unfair! We have the right to protest and express our opinions, even if they are unpopular!
  • We should file for a case in the Supreme Court.
  • Yes! The school officials aren't allowed to violate our rights to freedom of speech and protest.
  • Supreme Court Feb. 24, 1969
  • Christopher Eckhardt, Mary Beth Tinker, and John Tinker win the case!
  • "Students do not 'shed their constitutional rights to freedom of speech or expression at the schoolhouse gate.' ...In the absence of a specific showing of constitutionally valid reasons to regulate their speech, students are entitled to freedom of expression of their views."
