Gotama Buddha was born in the wood of Lumbini. When the Queen went into labour, she held onto a tree branch and Buddha was born from her right side. He then took 7 steps North, East, South and West. Wherever he stepped a lotus flower would grow.
Before Buddha's birth, his mother had a dream about white elephant with 6 tusks and a ruby head. The King then got holy men to interpret the dream and it was a sign that Buddha would either be a great king or a great holy man. If he ever saw suffering he would not be king. The king wanted his son the become the next king so he kept Buddha within the palace.
Gotama lived a life of luxury. He was given everything he could possibly want, he even had a wife and son but he was unhappy.
One day Buddha asked his chariot-driver, Channa, to take him out into the city. On that day he saw an old man, a sick man and dead man. This was the first time he had seen suffering and it confused him. He also saw a holy man. The holy man make Buddha decide to leave the palace and join the holy man in search of the truth
Buddha decided to join a group of ascetics. Ascetics are people who live with no bodily comfort so that they can learn the truth a rains of rice a day. He starved himself until one day a girl offered him water. It was then that he discovered the 'Middle Way'. He said that the truth must lie somewhere between the two extremes.
Buddha then left the ascetics and sat under a Bodhi tree waiting to discover the truth about life. A devil called Mara apparently came to Buddha trying to keep him away from the truth. He did not succeed and during the night Buddha cam to know about all his past lives, the nature of suffering and that it was possible to live without suffering. This is when he became 'Buddha' which means 'enlightened one'.
