Although Janie was never truly satisfied within her marriage with Joe, in chapter 8, the secret sickness that Joe held back from Janie, hurt her. He didn't allow her to take care of him and in a way he still tried to exert his controlling ways onto her.
Pheoby and Janie's friendship remained, as Janie confided in her, about all of the troubles within her home.
The passing of Joe, somewhat freed Janie from the bondage that was very apparent in her marriage.
FREEDOM. Is what this picture represents. Although she mourned the loss of her husband, as any human would, she was now really free.
Though he's 12 years younger than Janie, the attractive, tall, lazy-eyed man; Vergible Woods, kept Janie happy and smiling. His arrival makes Janie's loneliness seem nonexistent.
Vergible, commonly known as Tea Cake brings excitement and new experiences to Janie's life. He allows her to do as she wants, without being controlling, as her last husband was.
