On the 2nd of December , 1911 Douglas Mawson set sail on his expedition to Antarctica. He had recently been to Antarctica with Ernest Shackleton and he decided he is going to go back to the map the coast of Antarctica himself. he called his expedition the Australiasian Antarctica Exploration.
Firstly, He sailed to Maquarie Island to set up a research base so he can communicate with Australia whilst he is on his expedition. This was the very first line of communication ever without wire.
When they got there they were welcomed with 240km/h winds but just managed to build themselves a hut to stay in. It can be found in Antarctica to this day.
Mawson had decided that it was time to go tracking through the snow so he gather himself, a soldier, a doctor and a pack of huskies. along the way they collected samples and mapped their jounrney. Unfortunatley one member fell into a creves and they lost many supplies.
They lost so much that they soon ran out of food and had to start eating their huskies. but they soon found out that husky livers were poisonous to humans and they got so sick that the doctor died. He pushed through and didn't stop until he reached his hut.
When he got there the ship had just left because winter was rolling in and they didn't want to get stranded. One year later when he returned to Australia and was rewarded for his bravery and consistence. This adventure to this day is called the greatest survival story of all time.
