In the 20th century an inspiration polar explorer to Antarctica Ernest Shackleton was born on the 15th of Februrary 1874 in a country Kildare, Ireland.
In his early life one of his favorite things to do was read books. he was an avid reader and had a wild imagination.
His father always wanted him to follow his footsteps but Ernest had other ideas. When he was sixteen he join the navy merchant and two years later was promoted to first mate.
In 1901 he made an expedition to Antarctica with his best mate Robert Scott but along the way they had to stop because of the weather and his poor health conditions.
In 1908 he went on another expedition to the south pole in his bot the Nimrod. Despite really bad conditions they reached the south pole on the 15th Janurary, 1909. He was later awarded a medal for the Royal Geographical Society.
He went on another expedition in 1914 and became trapped. after several cold and terrible months spring came around and the ship thawed out and got rescued by a rescue team and everyone survived. He later died on the 15th Januray, 1922 and was buried at South Georgia, the Sandwich Islands.
