  • JUNE 3, 1961 Clarence Earl Gideon entered a pool room in Florida with intent to commit a misdemeanor.
  • HAHA no.
  • I WANT A LAWYER!
  • Gideon was too poor to afford counsel and requested that the court appoint a lawyer for him. The court refused, and he was sentenced to 5 years in prison.
  • THIS VIOLATES MY 6TH AMENDMENT RIGHT TO COUNSEL. :(
  • The government of the state of Florida wanted to keep the law the same.
  • In 1963, the Supreme Court unanimously decided that all defendants should be appointed an attorney, regardless of ability to pay. Gideon was released.
