Storyboard Text

  • Scout goes to School
  • "Scout your dad should not be teaching you how to read."
  • But I love reading with him
  • But I love reading with him
  • Scout gets in a fight
  • "You got me in trouble!!!"
  • Scout learns a lesson
  • "Scout, you can't make fun of the way others eat."
  • "Miss Caroline told me to tell my father not to teach me anymore, it would interfere with my reading"(Lee 22). At the beginning of the novel, Scout was an innocent first grader who did not think it was such a big deal to already know how to read. Later she realized that school was really boring and that she could still read with Atticus. This quote is a good way to show the evolution of Scout because she continues to grow and learn throughout the rest of the novel.
  • Scout backs down from a fight
  • Dad told me I cannot fight if people say bad things about him.
  • "Catching Walter Cunningham in the schoolyard gave me some pleasure, but when I was rubbing his nose in the dirt Jem came by and told me to stop" (Lee 30). Scout was immature when he saw Walter, it was unnecessary for her to rub his face in the dirt. This proves that she as a character is still evolving and learning how to act in life.
  • Scout stands up for her dad
  • "Your dad is a nigger-lover."
  • "It was then that Calpurnia requested my presence in the kitchen" (Lee 32). Scout is still young because she did not know that it was wrong to make fun of the way someone else ate, so Cal had to teach her a valuable lesson. Scout is constantly being taught small but much-needed lessons about ways to be nicer to others. Scout is only young so she is still learning.
  • Scout teaches Uncle Jack a lesson
  • "You have to listen to my side of the story first."
  • "I drew a bead on him, remembered what Atticus had said, then dropped my fists and walked away" (Lee 102). Scout is slowly learning how to choose wisely what she does when someone makes her mad. In this case, she remembered what Atticus had said and walked away from a fight she could have easily participated in. She has changed from the beginning of the book because earlier she would have fought and now she backs away.
  • "I guess it ain't your fault if Uncle Atticus is a nigger-lover besides" (Lee 110). Although Scout does pick a fight with Francis it is for the right reason because what he said was so wrong. This still shows her evolution because she has gotten into less fight and even though her dad said not to stand up for him she only thought it was right in this situation. Francis also needed to learn a lesson that people shouldn't just say whatever comes to mind.
  • "I reckon I love you even after what you did, but you don't understand children much'' (Lee 113). This quote shows the evolution of Scout because she teaches Uncle Jack a lesson on parenting, which was not what happened at the beginning of the book. She was usually the one who was being taught but in this case, she taught Jack to hear out Scouts side of the story, she also had a good reason why she fought that Jack did not know until he listened.
