  • Language through time by Stella Maloney
  • Hi I'm Beowulf "Beowulf waes breme blead wide sprang"
  • Hi I'm chaucer
  • This cartoon will look at the four different time periods of English and how they have impacted the way we speak English today. These time periods are: Old English, Middle English, Shakespeare and Slang.
  • hi I'm Romeo
  • hi I'm Juliet
  • The time period of old English is 450 - 1150, it is influenced by different languages including Latin, Greek, French, Scandinavian, Italian and abric. The language is hard to read because the words are written and read different to ours so it is harder for us to understand then it was in their time. In the time of Old English they had a famous poem call Beowulf.
  • Lets have a barbi
  • The time period of middle English is 1150 - 1500. It is famous for the poem called 'The Canterbury Tales' by Geoffrey Chaucer. The poem is about a group of people travelling on a pilgrimage from London to Canterbury. Middle English is different from the language we speak today because its different spelling and pronouncing to our language today.
  • The End
  • The time period of Shakespeare is 1500 - 1800. All together there has been 37 plays, including Romeo and Juliet. In Shakespheare's time they had made 1700 new words which we still use today. Shakespeare's was hard to read because they pronounced words differently to how we would and it is more formal.
  • There are different types of slang including Rhyming slang, changed spelling,  and regional slang. Rhyming slang is where the slang rhyms, changed spelling is where it is different spelling, regional slang is slang from other regions. Slanguage is hard to understand because the words are said differently.
  • As you can see these time periods have impacted how we speak today. It is clear that English has changed a lot over time; they were very hard to read, say and spell, but today it is much easier.
