when the two first met he was still living with his mother, over near Spring Lake. One time when the wife was going for a walk in the woods she met him by himself coming back from a hunting trip, but he had no game with him.
the husband would start leaving in the middle of the night. the wife awakening asking, “Where you going to?” and he’d say, “Oh, hunting, be back this evening,” but it wasn’t like him, even his voice sounded different.

The changing. first in his feet, they got long the toes stretching out and fleshy, and white. and he turned his face. It was changing, it got flatter, mouth flat and wide, and the teeth grinning flat, dull, the nose just a knob of flesh, the ears gone, and the eyes gone blue.
The man looked around at all of us and yelled. he brandished the branch it held. he ran, heading for the cleared fields and plow lands, down the mountainside. It ran, leaping and weaving, and we followed it.
