Salva (the boy in the orange robe) is at school, daydreaming while his teacher is giving a lesson.
Then, a noise that sounds like a gun firing echoes throughout their town, Loun Ariik.
More gunfire is heard. A war is going on in their country, and it has reached Loun Ariik. Salva and the other village kids could get captured or hurt. The boys especially, because they could get recruited into the army.
Salva and the other villagers flee for their lives, into the bush, where the soldiers won't follow.
Salva and his group run into soldiers, and the soldiers separate the men from the women and children. When Salva tries to go over to the men's group, a soldier lifts Salva's face up with his gun and tells him to join the woman and children's group.
Salva walks with the group to a barn and they sleep there for the night.
