Marco Polo's Early Years
Marco Polo was born around 1254 into a merchant family in Venice. His father Niccolo and his uncle Maffeo left Polo since they had to go on a trading expedition. Niccolo and Maffeo stayed in Constantinople and Soldaia. Then, they traded silk and gems to others. After that, they were recommended to visit Kublai Khan.

Marco Polo's Travels Along the Silk Road
Two years later, Marco Polo, Niccolo, and Maffeo sailed to Acre (Israel). They also followed Kublai Khan's requests to get holy oil, papal documents, and two friars from Pope Gregory X . They traveled across Asia and finally back home.
Marco Polo in Venice
After returning home, Polo was captured by Venice's archrival Genoa. In prison, he met Rustichello of Pisa (Polo and Rustichello collaborated and made a manuscript). Finally, a Genoese-Venetian peace treaty allowed him to return home and be free. Polo died in January 1324 and he inspired many travelers.
