Charles Darwin has always been interested in nature. He was born in the 1800's and was going to be a doctor. He thought this was a better suit for him, it has helped us out alot too.
Soon Charles Darwin traveled around the world. He ended up in the Galapagos islands. These are just off of South America. Here he kept a journal of what he found and he found something that helps animals survive in the wild.
Charles found birds called finches. He studied these birds for years and learned a lot about them. They had a lot of similarities and differences.
Charles found that the birds have different beaks. He found out that the beaks are not just on accident, they are for a reason. The fiches beaks help them eat different foods. Some of the fiches had strong beaks that helps crack nuts. The other fiches had long and thin perfect for catching insects in trees.
This lead Charles Darwin to the important Theory of Evolution. This is is a theory he wrote about, he did not say that the birds beaks change for the food they eat. He said that on the island they were variations in the beaks. HE said that they had the beaks thworked best for where they were.
His theory helped all around the world even though it was rejected at the time. It says that the animals that have the best traits to survive in their habitat will have the most children and will survive the longest. All the animals pass the genes down to their children and this kept the animals live for a long time.
