  • Chapter 1
  • When I was a girl, I was up before the sun...
  • Chapter 2
  • Where's Polly? Did you pass by the blacksmith's?
  • Matilda, Polly is dead.
  • Chapter 4
  • A husband! A husband!
  • We'll have to find a husband for you.
  • In chapter 1, Matilda is woken up by her mother and also bitten by multiple mosquitoes. Her servant, Polly, was late while Silas, her cat was chasing a mousing across the room, eventually catching it, and killing it. When Matilda got up she picked up the dead mouse to throw it out the window when she decided it would be better to put it in the garden so Silas can find it.
  • Chapter 5
  • Good afternoon, Nathaniel. Kindly return my basket.
  • In chapter 2, Matilda's mother continues to go on and on about how Matilda gets too much sleep. Eliza, who worked for them, came into the story. She was a freed black slave who wanted to save money to free her husband but unfortunately he died. That goes for Matilda's father too. Matilda's mother went out looking for Polly only to find that she died of yellow fever.
  • Chapter 7
  • In chapter 4, the coffeehouse is packed with customers. One of them is Matilda's grandfather, Captain William Farmsworth Cook, a feisty old soldier, and his parrot, King George. Plus 2 others, Mr. Carris who was a businessman, and another who was a lawyer. Who were all discussing the fever. Matilda is reminded of Polly's death and wonders if her boyfriend knows.
  • Chapter 8
  • Mother!
  • In chapter 5, the death toll has reached 64. People start avoiding the shops down by the river which is a good thing for the coffeehouse. Lucille is quite worn out and the grandfather suggests having Matilda go to the Market which Lucille eventually agrees to. Matilda buys some stuff and then runs into her crush, Nathanial Benson. Then, they talk for a while.
  • In chapter 7,  Matilda and Lucille get invited for tea at the rich Pernilla Ogilvie's house. When they arrive they are directed to the table where everybody's talking. Pernilla brags about her daughters when Lucille starts asking about her sons. Collete, one of the daughters looks sick and starts complaining about the heat and then faints because of the fever
  • The fever!
  • In chapter 8, the church bells keep tolling and the bodies are piling up. Matilda and her grandfather go to the newspaper office where they continue to all talk about the fever outbreak. When they arrive home they find a man about to dump what seems to be a dead body in front of the coffeehouse. Matilda's grandfather stops him but then he realized it is Lucille!
