The story takes place in the old mans house where the narrator lives. He loves the old man. He takes care of him everyday. However, there is one thing he is irritated by--the old man's vulturous pale blue eye.
The narrator despises the old man's "vulture eye" as he describes it as. The eye causes him to set out his "insane" plan to rid himself from the eye. He progresses a plot to murder the old man.
For 7 nights, the narrator takes care of the man but every night he creeps up to the old man's room and opens the door. On the eight night, he does the same thing yet more carefully than usual. The old man is woken up but the narrator waits silently and lets a slimmer of light shine through the lanterns.
The ray shines upon the old man's eye and the narrator is now furious. He hears a rapid heartbeat from the old man growing faster. The narrator is worried that the neighbors could hear. He kills the old man by putting the heavy bed over him, suffocating him.
The narrator hides the corpse under some planks. Police come to the house. The narrator lets them in and tries to remain calm.
While they are chatting, the narrator begins to hear a ringing noise beginning to increase louder and louder. He becomes almost paranoid! the noise is driving him mentally insane. He cannot stand the noise or grinning faces of the police officers any longer. He finally confesses his guilt.
