Storyboard Description

Permineralization

Storyboard Text

  • Hey, have you heard the latest on planet Earth?
  • What do you mean? What are those earthlings doing now?
  • They found new fossils on Earth that were formed by permineralization
  • Wait! What is a fossil? What is permineralization?
  • A fossil is an organism preserved in petrified form. Permineralization is a process that creates a fossil
  • What do you mean? How does permineralization work?
  • Well, you see, in permineralization the bones or plant materials or shells mix with the mineral matter from the soil, lake or ocean. In some cases, the replacement happens in a way that each atom is replaced one by one. The result is a bone that looks like a rock. It is so cool!
  • Wow, that is weird, not sure I get it
  • Do you understand what I mean?
  • What you are trying to say is that for example a bone could be fossilized when it is buried when minerals seep into the organic tissue and mineral replace it and form into a crystal. Is that right? It then looks like a crystal cast.
  • But that means, they can find our ancestors on Earth! They have become crystals! That is amazing!
  • I know permineralization, but how did we change colors and places?
  • That is correct!
