Do you agree?
The Chief Elder calls the children's numbers. Fiona, (Jonas' crush) is called, and Jonas prepares to get up because Fiona is number 18, and Jonas is 19. But, the Chief Elder skips Jonas. Finally, when she is done calling numbers, she explains why she skipped him. Jonas finds out that he will be the new receiver of memory, because he has the ability to see beyond, and he is the perfect person to be the receiver of memory.
Jonas begins his training to be the Receiver of Memory. He is given rules to follow. He is told to lay down on a bed and take off his shirt. The Giver puts his hands on Jonas' back and starts to give Jonas memories.
Jonas doesn't like the idea of having just one person holding all the memories of the past, so he thinks everyone should have them. He also thinks everyone in his community should see color. He tells the giver about this, and the giver is not sure about it.
Jonas left his community in search of the border of memory. If he crossed it, everyone in his community would get every memory and would be able to see color. Jonas does end up making it past the border with Gabriel. Gabe is the child that Jonas' dad was taking care of in the nurture center who Jonas knew was going to be the next receiver if memory because of the mark he had on his arm. It was the same mark that The giver had as well.
