  • “As they rounded a curve, it appeared as if the mountains pulled away from each other, like a curtain opening on a stage, revealing the San Joaquin valley beyond.”(Pg. 94) This means the valley looked as if it was being torn apart to show The Valley beyond.
  • “The road finally leveled out on the valley floor, and she gazed back at the mountains from where they’d come. They looked like monstrous lions’ paws resting at the edge of the ridge.”(Pg.94) This means when Esperanza looked back on the on the path they took the mountains looked as if the were getting farther and farther away, and they looked if they were lions paws in the distance.
  • "The wind blew hard that night and the house moaned and whistled." (Pg. 39) The author used this language to explain and say that the house sounded as if it was moaning with the wind.
