  • France is Bankrupt
  • Third Estate walks out of the assembly 
  • Bastille Day
  • France is bankrupt due to previous kings spending to much money on wars. Food prices were very high and pay was very low.  Also, nobles barely paid and peasants paid all of the taxes. 
  • The revolutionaries gained control
  • The Third Estate ( mainly poor merchants and peasant farmers ) walked out of King Louis XVI's assembly because they felt it was not fair they had to pay the majority of the taxes.  After they had a oath on the palace tennis courts swearing they would write a constitution for France.  This sparked the French Revolution.
  • Danton leads the citzens but Robespierre intervenes 
  • On July 14th peasants with weapons went to the Bastille, a prison and fortress.  During the fight they set seven protesters free and killed the governor and several soldiers.
  • Reign of Terror
  • The King attempted to escape France and was caught and beheaded.  After the revolutionaries gained power!
  • Georges Danton was a thoughtful and bold leader who wanted to protect the people.  On the other hand Machiavelli Robespierre wanted to murder anyone against him or the revolution.  He beheaded many people including Danton and started the Reign of Terror.
  • Robespierre determined who was a traitor and went forth to have them beheaded.  In the end 30,000 people were killed!
