Return my property!
But I don't have your helm. I came for the master bolt
Percy learns more about himself at camp: his father is Poseidon, the god of the Sea and brother to Zeus and Hades. Percy is tasked by the Oracle to retrieve Zeus' stolen lightning bolt, who mistakenly believed Poseidon took the lightning bolt. Zeus informs Poseidon that by the summer solstice the master bolt needs to be returned to Mount Olympus, or else he will declare war on Poseidon. Poseidon is appalled that Zeus is accusing him of stealing the bolt.
Percy heads out on a quest to recover the master bolt of Zeus which is believed to be in the Underworld's imprisonment of Hades. Helping Percy is Grover, his best friend, and Annabeth, an articulate demi-goddess and Athena's daughter. The trio traveled through America, from New York to Los Angeles, where the Underworld gates are located. Along the way, they are attacked by Furies, Medusa, Echidna, Chimera, and several other monsters.
My master Kronos will destroy the gods!
When they arrive in Hades’s realm, Hades accuses Percy of stealing his helm, threatening to kill him and his mother before releasing the dead into the world. Percy discovers that Hades does not have Zeus’ master bolt and lacks his symbol of power: the helm of darkness. Hades accuses Percy of stealing for his father, Poseidon, both the master bolt and the helm of darkness. He accuses Poseidon of having a hunger for power. To make matters worse, the master bolt magically appears in Percy's bag as he meets with Hades.
After fleeing the wrath of Hades, Percy, Annabeth, and Grover meet Ares, the god of war, on the beach in Santa Monica. Percy learns that Ares stole the master bolt from the original thief and the helm of darkness.Ares was tempted by the prospect of sparking one of the greatest wars between Hades, Zeus, and Poseidon of all time. Ares castes a spell on Percy, saying that every time he needs his blade in battle, it will fail him. Percy returns the helm to Hades, and he returns Sally safely in exchange.
On the final day of summer, Luke reveals to Percy that he was the real thief of the bolt and the Helm of Darkness. He informs Percy that he followed orders of Kronos, the Lord of the Titans and that Kronos wants to destroy and get rid of the Olympians. Luke vanishes, leaving a venomous scorpion to sting Percy. Percy nearly dies from the scorpion bite but was rescued by wood nymphs who carried him to safety. Percy's teacher, Chiron, nurses him back to health. Percy decides to go home and live with his mother for his seventh-grade year.
