Another character in the book is Juli. She is the same age as Lida. Lida and Juli become friends. Juli works in the hospital. She is a Ukrainian like Lida. Juli is a minor character.
Juli is caring. In this passage there was recently an explosion in one of the factories that Lida works at. Juli begins to perform fist aid on her. "Juli brought over a basin of water and a bottle of disinfectant. She cleaned surface scratches on my face and scalp that I didn't even know I had, then she gingerly removed my thin shoes and washed my feet with warm water and disinfectant." This showed that she was caring because no one else was gonna care for Lida so Juli did it herself.
Juli is also brave. In this passage Juli has a gun in her hands and is getting ready to shoot the last officer that is left in the camp. "Put the gun down, girl. I don't take orders from anyone. Said Juli. She pointed the pistol at his head Oh you'll obey me, put it down now. In a flash Juli pulled the trigger. A loud bang cracked through the air. Officer Schmidt jerked back. He stumbled back a bit and tried to regain his balance. Juli wasted no time. She pulled the trigger again. This time she missed by a long way. Officer Schmidt smiled. With cruel deliberation, he aimed at Juli and squeezed the trigger. At that very moment I heard a double boom. Juli and Officer Schmidt both fell to the ground. This time I could see blood on his cheek. I ran to Juli. You're safe now. Get out of here. She said. Her eyes went dim. Juli please wake up! Thats when I knew she was dead. Juli had sacrificed her life so we could all escape. Thank you Juli. You are braver than anyone I can imagine." This showed bravery because she shot the last remaining officer so that everyone else could escape.
Another trait that Juli has is that she is generous. In this passage the kids had just gotten off of the train. "I have something for you, she said. Come quickly. She knelt in front of her bed which was a bottom bunk close to the heater at the back, reached under the bed, and drew out a pair of worn leather shoes that were made for a woman. Shoes were like gold in the camp." This was generous because Juli could have kept the shoes for herself but instad she gave them to Lida.
One trait that changed is that she got braver throughout the book. At the beginning of the book she would have never sacrificed her life for all of these people. But at the end she realized what was the most important, saving the most people. This is how she got the bravery to shoot the officer.
When Juli became friends with Lida this helped her become more generous. When she performed first aid on Lida and gave her a pair of shoes that was done out of friendship. If Lida and Juli had never became friends those things might not have happened.
