Bruno lives happily in a large home in Berlin. He lives with his parents, sister, maid, butler, and cook.
Bruno gets told that he has to leave Berlin. The family move to a secluded home in the middle of no where.
Bruno sees from his window that there is a camp with many people in the same striped pajamas. He asks his father who those people are. His father, being a Nazi soilder, tells him that those people are not really people at all.
Bruno meets an unlikable man called Lt. Kotler. His sister, Gretel, seems to be head over heels for him, but Bruno dislikes him.
One day while exploring the back of the house, Bruno gets to the camp and finds a boy named Shmuel. The two boys become very close despite the differences in their situations. Because Bruno is naive,he does not understand why Shmuel is there and believes that its a "town " like any other.
Bruno's mother finds out that both children had lice. She resorts to asking Brunos father to move back to Berlin and he accepts the request. Bruno decides to visit his friend one last time. Shmuel convinces bruno to come over to the camp in search for Shmuel's father. Bruno does so and seals his fate. The boys are told to go on a "march''. In reality the two boys are take into a gas chamber and killed.
