Every family in the community is to share their feelings every night at the dinner table. Jonas' parents and little sister, Lily, share about their days as a ritual.
Jonas shares to his parents that he is feeling apprehensive toward becoming a Twelve. Therefore, his parents decide that they should comfort him and explain how it will all work out that day.
One Morning during breakfast, Jonas is told to share his dream. This is rare because Jonas barely ever dreams. He describes his dream to his parents who instruct him to take a pill which would stop these dreams.
The first ceremony to be held was the Ceremony of the Ones. Here, babies were given into the families who applied for their first or second child

After being skipped, Jonas is selected to be the next Receiver of Memory. As he reads his instructions, he is very surprised to see that on of the rules he was allowed was lying. This was startling especially because he believed that no one ever lied
