Immigration Experience to Sweden
This storyboard does not have a description.
Charles and his family live in Sweden. They have to emigrate to America because Sweden is overpopulated and the crops are failing. They want a chance for a better life. Charles has a brother who already immigrated to America and they will see each other again.
Charles' family traveled by wagon to the ship. They board and have to stay in the bottom of the boat with many other people. It is overcrowded and unsanitary. Illnesses are spreading around.
Charles' son becomes sick with Cholera because of the poor sanitation and passes away. He will have a burial at sea.
Charles and his wife reach land and wait for hours to be inspected at Castle Garden, New York which opened in 1855 as the Emigration Landing Depot. They have a health inspection, and answer questions. The city is busy and they are overwhelmed because so many languages are being spoken.
They take the train to Chicago. Riding a train is a new experience for them and they have to travel for days through forests and fields. Charles and his wife are fortunate enough to have the money to rent a horse and wagon and they travel to Wisconsin.
Charles and his wife finally arrive at his brother's farm. The soil is fertile, and they start working hard. Winters are bitterly cold and sometimes there isn't enough food. Some crops die because of drought. There is a high cost to send crops to the market.
