In order to raise money, Britain created the Townshend Acts in 1767 which taxed imported goods in the colonies. This angered many colonists, and they started imposing non-importation agreements.
Town- shend Acts
Since when do I have to pay a tax? That's not fair!
Woah were do you think you're going? You haven't paid the tax
The British created the Declaratory Act in 1766 which stated that they had control over the colonies, and made all the decisions on taxation.
Hooray! Britain repealed the Stamp Act!
But now they're enforcing the Declaratory Act, so everyone is still mad
Some of the colonists started to insult British soldiers and throw snowballs at them, so they called in for back up.
You guys suck! We hate you!
Help! They're forming a mob
The mob started to grow and some people started to throw sticks and stones at the soldiers. A few of the colonists started to get closer to the soldiers and taunt them, and then shots rang out. Several colonists were killed and injured.
We told you to stay back!
A few days after the massacre, John Adams received a letter asking him to defend the soldiers in court. He accepted the case because he believed that every man deserved right to a fair trial.
If you accept the case everyone will hate us!
It doesn't matter, its my duty to represent them
We're innocent, they attacked us first!
John Adams claimed that the soldiers acted out of self-defense. He ended up winning the trial, and the soldiers escaped the death penalty.
