Equality starts the story by talking about himself, and the society he lives in. One day, as he and International are doing their job of being Street Sweepers, they come across a tunnel that leads to a place unknown to man. International is hesitant, but Equality is determined to study it.
In Chapter II, Equality meets Liberty. They speak to each other even thought it's forbidden. At the end, Equality talks about the time someone was burned to death for saying the Unspeakable Word. He starts questioning why the victim seemed at peace.
In Chapter III, Equality discovers something new. It happened when he was cutting open a dead frog with metal and the frog jumped. He discovered electricity and believes he now holds more wisdom than the Scholars. Working alone for 2 years has made him become more and more curious every day.
In this chapter, Equality kisses Liberty's hand as she is giving him water. Liberty is shocked by this act and doesn't know what to do, and Equality doesn't understand why he did it. Liberty doesn't know what to do, and ends up just walking away.
In this chapter, Equality has decided on showing the World Council his invention. He thinks he will be forgiven for all of his sins with this gift of light. He believes that he can change the future alone.
In this chapter, Equality is whipped in the Palace of Corrective Detention for not telling where he was. He showed up late to the Home of the Street Sweepers, and he wouldn't say where he was. After this situation, Equality decides that he will go to the Home of the Scholars the next day and bring them the gift of light.
