  • I only have room for the eldest on this land I must send you away.
  • Please grant my divorce.
  • I cannot allow this!
  • The Pope has too much power!
  • I agree. We need to find a way to get my divorce.
  • Thomas's father sent him and his brother to join the clergy as they was not the oldest children. This was the first step into Thomas's religious life and what led him onto the great things he did.
  • I declare King Henry VII and Catherine of Aragon anulled.
  • Henry VIII was in the same area as Thomas Cranmer so he reached out to Thomas and asked for his help in getting divorced. Henry went to the Pope and asked for him to grant his divorce but it was denied.
  • This is not right it needs to be changed.
  • Thomas thought the Pope had too much power and that King Henry VII should be able to do what he wanted. Henry and Thomas tried to think of a way to get his divorce without having the Pope's permission.
  • We can afford a child!

  • In 1533, Thomas was chosen to be archbishop of Canterbury which gave him the power to divorce Henry VII and Catherine of Aragon. He divorced them, and as a result of this, Henry created the Church of England and appointed himself as the leader with Thomas Cramner by his side.
  • Cranmer translated the bible into English, and in 1545 he wrote a litany that is used to this day, and made changes he thought necessary to the Church. He also helped complete the common book of prayer in 1549.
  • Because of Thomas Cranmer, there was more equality in the world and people didn't have to buy indulgences to get out of purgatory.
